Genre Research Summery

With the genre 'Noir' I have found that most films of this genre have a certain theme to it, emphasizing certain attitudes towards gender.

The titles tend to look bold preferably white with a black outline which makes them stand out, most films of this genre I have seen have transitions of fading in and out gradually getting bigger then fading away.

They use non-diegetic sounds of the narrators commentary and they also use sound effects to emphasize dramatic sounds.
We mainly see the main characters in the opening sequences such as the female destroyer and her partner in crime or it may just be the main good characters. They are shown through technical features such as the female destroyer wears a long black coat and nearly all the time has a cigarette in her hand.
In the Noir genre I have seen that the lighting is very important because it creates the dramatic effects within the film.
'Film Noir' is French for black film as noir is the colour black. It is known for high contrast lighting emphasizing the light and dark shadows.

Narrative codes are used to create tension within the sequence as there is either strange non diegetic sounds with slow pace of editing. You don't tend to see many noir films with fast editing unless something like a 'chase' is happening.
The use of lighting and the high contrast I think is something I would take into account within the genre we are working in as this is what creates a good noir film. It is essential because it helps create the actors character and also sets the tension within the scene.
